American Diabetes Association’s 11th annual Step Out to Fight Diabetes

Step Out

Did you know?

 •

Diabetes affects approximately 23.6 million people in the United States.  Over 110,000 people are living with the disease in Hawaii.

 •

Of all of the children born in the U.S. in the year 2000, one in three will have diabetes in their lifetime.  In Hawaii, the ratio is higher, as half of all children will be afflicted with the disease.

 •

Diabetes costs the American health care system $116 billion per year.

 •

Heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, loss of limbs, and nerve damage are some of the complications associated with diabetes.

 •

We can do something about it!  Donations to the American Diabetes Association go toward research and educational programs in Hawaii, so we can take a stand and fight for a cure.

Step Out to Fight Diabetes

Hawaiian Electric is proud to serve as the lead corporate sponsor for the American Diabetes Association’s 11th annual Step Out to Fight Diabetes on Saturday, March 20, at Kapiolani Park.  The 2.3 mile run/walk is held to build awareness about the disease, and raise money for diabetes research and educational programs.

There are lots of ways to participate:

 •

Walk with us:  Call 947-5979 to sign up for the walk.  Everyone is welcome, so sign up your family and friends, too!

 •

Coordinate a fundraiser:  How about planning a craft sale at work or a healthy bento benefit lunch?  It’s a great way to get involved.

 •

Support a walker:  If you can’t make it to the walk, support a friend or co-worker with a monetary pledge.  Call 947-5979 to make a donation.

Join the Hawaiian Electric Ohana in fighting this disease by getting involved and making a pledge to have a happy and healthy 2010!
